Companion FAQ

Do I need caregiving experience?
No. HeyFriend is about friendship, not caregiving. Kindness, patience and reliability matter far more than qualifications. First-aid or healthcare qualifications are welcome but entirely optional.
Is this paid?
Yes—companions are compensated for their visits. We'll share full details, including rates for your area, during the interview conversation. That said, the best companions join for the connection first.
How often must I visit?
Most matches involve one to three visits per week, agreed between you, the older adult and their family. What matters is showing up consistently at the times you've committed to—someone is looking forward to it.
How are matches selected?
We match on personality, shared language, interests, location and schedule. You'll always learn about the person before an introduction, and both of you must feel comfortable before regular visits begin.
Can I decline a match?
Yes, always. A match only works when it feels right on both sides. Declining a proposed match never counts against you.
What training will I receive?
Onboarding covers communication with older adults, boundaries and conduct, privacy, safety awareness and what to do in an emergency. You'll also have ongoing support from the HeyFriend team whenever questions come up.
What activities are allowed?
Social activities: conversation, meals, walks, hobbies, games, outings, community events and technology help. Not allowed: medical care, bathing, lifting, medication management, financial handling or anything covered by regulated caregiving.
What should I do during an emergency?
Call local emergency services first, stay with the older adult, then notify their family contact and the HeyFriend team. This is covered thoroughly in training. HeyFriend is not an emergency response provider.
Can I accept gifts?
Small tokens like home-cooked food or a card are a lovely part of friendship. Money, valuables or large gifts must be politely declined and reported to the team—it protects you as much as it protects them.
How long should I commit?
We ask for a minimum of three months, and most companions stay much longer. Consistency is what turns visits into friendship—if your circumstances change, we'll work with you on a warm handover.
